JG LeadTeam Job Description
You're here because you want to share the river culture with your family, and who best to do that but you! We see a LOT of Parent talent, and your participation will help create the best family summer camp experience possible. JG grows annually, beyond what our small volunteer board of directors can provide. We need you!!! We are looking for two or three enthusiastic individuals to form the “Program Team,” and work together to provide the oversight for off-river activities. A regular staffer ( Barry or Sarah) will still serve as Camp Director, providing general oversight and liaison with the on-river activities. Successful applicants will receive one tuition credit of $350 in exchange for working with your team, an expected commitment of between 10 and 15 hours.
Lead Teams handle aspects of JG Raft Camp that occur the evening before and during camp. In general, one Team Leader will take on the role of Camp Funster/People Person and facilitate the evening programs, both the dance party night and the skit/talent night. One parent will serve as the Site Lead and will be the point person for Jerry at Earthtrek, manage the beach and ensure safe post-rafting river play by campers, and manage the SuperSup. One parent need serve as the JG Apparel Lead and will manage all marketing, display and sales of t-shirts/sweatshirts, as well as manage the collection of guide tips. All three leads will work together to run the evening programs, announcements and other organized camp activities. These job divisions give you a broad sense of the primary operations at camp. However the leads will need to work together to fill in the gaps and make sure camp runs smoothly. Most materials for camp are stored at Earthtrek, in the JG locked storage closet located near Jerry's office, you’ll find swag, carabiners, wetsuits, award tape, off river PFDs.

Below are more specific details about the Role Team Leader:
Day/evening prior to day 1 of camp:
Meet with your Team Leaders, collaborate to confirm that all duties are equally distributed. Inscribe carabiners with names, confirm carabiner tape is ready to distribute. Set up the apparel sales area, check to make sure sales equipment works, and organize the gear, including wetsuits.
First Morning Of Camp:
All 3 individuals participate in registration, starting at 8:00am. Set up tables/wetsuits, pass out carabiners, assist with wetsuit fitting, answer parent questions, check in names, hand out wristbands to overnight campers, get waivers signed, participate in opening announcements. Then continue with assisting RiverRunners guides getting name tape on helmets, clean up benches of snack trash after departure. Manage lost and found. Give kids who forgot one a water bottle. Comfort first- time concerned parents. Based on new information received at registration, changes may be made to boat assignments (Don't make any promises without checking with RiverRunners john or Camp Director Barry/Sarah.
During the first morning, you will not be available to assist your own children, as the check in process needs to be timely, so ask your child to be independent or watched by another parent. If possible, do some swag sales so kids who don't have proper river wear can buy river shirts.
Outline for the Morning Welcome Meeting, led by Camp Director and RR Senior Guides, at 9:15am in the main kitchen. The meeting should last 25-30 minutes and should include (but not necessarily in this order)
9:45 Parent Meeting: facilitate parent meeting in upper kitchen area, after campers are dismissed. Part of the purpose of the parent meeting is to liberate the campers from the occasional helicopter parent AS WELL AS to connect the parents with each other. Help facilitate a parent raft trip if desired. Connect parents with boats with those that want to join them.
Daily Ducks Lunch
Assist the RiverRunners guides at the Ducks lunch each day at Camp Lotus from approximately 11:30-1:30ish. May include reapplying sunscreen, encouraging polite eating behaviors, assisting with the craft projects, help with wetsuits/toileting, etc. Entrance fee to Camp Lotus and lunch for one person is covered by JG. On the first day you will set up the craft with electric cords, paper table covers, etc. On the last day you will remove it all when lunch is over.
Afternoon #1
Place JG PFD’s for after-rafting use down by the riverside, leave them there for the duration of camp. If water flows allow, deploy the Super SUP -floating-platform-dock with anchor in front of camp at 4pm ish. One Team leader should be at Earthtrek each day at 4pm to receive Ducks when they return so the RiverRunners Guides can be relieved. Team Leader stays with Ducks until they have been handed off to their respective parents.
Happy Hour/Dinner Announcements and sales
Open the Schwag store as convenient to allow sales which is generally during or after breakfast, and before and after dinner. At dinner, after everyone is served, make announcements to the gathered crowd: 1) thank the Ashburn family with applause 2) Outline the evening Pirate/Skit program and timing 3) Promote swag purchases saying portion goes towards camp scholarships4) Solicit breakfast volunteers.
Evening #1
Make sure meal volunteers (usually 3 people) are set to serve dinner, confirm with Earthtrek Jerry on the time they should arrive. The first evening event should be designed by the lead team. Since it is a Pirate theme, you might have a Pirate party set up in the covered lower kitchen. Decorations? Photo booth? theme music. Maybe have a playlist ready to go. Also a sound systems which can include your phone and a bluetooth speaker that is loud enough to be heard throughout the lower kitchen area. in addition to the unstructured activities, plan one activity that has a beginning, end, and winner. In past years we've done a limbo contest, last year we did a cowboy race on hobby horses with a water gun shooting range. Maybe Pirates walk the plank? A campground wide treasure hunt?!? Pinata? A contest to see who can walk with one leg bent up and talk like a pirate with a mouthful of crackers? Google it! If you spend money on supplies, we can reimburse you for up to $50.
Wrap Up Night #1, about 9pm
Check in with earthtrek Jerry and make sure all is well. Gently observe campers to make sure behaviors are respectful of the space, discipline or alert parents as needed. Make sure someone has brought in the SuperSUP.
Morning #2
Confirm breakfast servers, Make announcements at breakfast that include ‘campers be river- ready at beach at 9am.
Ducks Lunch
Ducks Lunch Support again, maybe take turns doing this job. More than one team program leader may do this, but there is typically only lunch provided for one person.
Happy Hour/Dinner
Swag sales. Solicit skit/talent night participants. If you choose Skits, use the paper collection of skits in the JG storage Space and help create small groups and hand out the skit papers for kids to improvise with. If interest is there, ask parents to participate and play some songs or tell stories or do trivia quizzes (name all the sierra nevada rivers from north to south)
Night #2 Skit /Talent Night- This night has morphed greatly over the years, so feel free to throw your own spin on it! Whatever you do, be sure to teach how to behave as a good audience; “Lights camera action!” Usually Skit night starts about 7:30 and lasts about 30 minutes. Encourage all campers to attend and be a good audience, even if they don't want to participate.
Morning #3
Confirm breakfast servers, Make announcements at breakfast that include ‘campers be river- ready in parking lot at 9am. Otters will be on the Upper American today and will take the big bus to get there. Start organizing guide tip.
Ducks Lunch- same, and yet this day may have more adult needs for supervision if they ducks take their craft boats to play at the riverside.
Camp Finale-
Participate in the Closing ceremony, Earthtrek Camp Kitchen about 4:00, and present Guide tip. After goodbyes, collect all gear from around camp and stow in EarthTreks JG gear closet. Wetsuits need to be sanitized; communicate with Sarah about how that will happen. Return SuperSup to storage area, account for all JG loaner PFD’s and rafting gear.

- Introductions of Lead Team, campground staff, and River Runners Senior Guides
- Agenda for the 3 days/Pirate theme activities (this announcement done by Lead Team)
- Pick-up time that day (for families not camping)
- Announce boat assignments and send kids off with their senior guides
- Share a Lead Team’s contact info should off-river parents have issues during the day, like late for pick up
- Inspirational Message by JG Board member if present, or substitute Lead Lead 5-10 minute inspirational message or song or skit
- Solicit additional Parent volunteer needs (3 parents are needed to help serve each meal)
- Safety: Lost and found in the main kitchen. Watch your kids and be respectful of the campground and don't run on table tops, no one goes in water without a PFD on, stay hydrated.
